Ayla: The Daughter of War is a 2017 Turkish drama film directed by Can Ulkay. It was selected as the Turkish entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 90th Academy Awards.
Ayla is based on the true story of Kim Eun-ja and Süleyman Dilbirliği, whose real-life reunion was shown in the documentary earlier. Turkey sends a brigade to South Korea as a result of the call for help made by the United Nations when North Korea invaded South Korea in 1950. Sergeant Süleyman, one of the soldiers in the sent brigade, finds a little girl whose mother and father were murdered on the night battlefield.
A young girl nearly frozen to death is saved by Süleyman, who gives her the nickname Ayla because he found her in the moonlight. The two form a friendship despite the language barrier between them, but are torn apart when Süleyman had to return home.
"Ayla" has gained the attention of international audiences due to its universal appeal, emotional story and lively performances.۔ "Ayla" has been issued a censorship certificate for screening in Pakistani cinemas across Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad and others cities too and its promotional campaign has also been launched. According to Sheikh Abid Rashid, "Ayla" will introduce Pakistani audiences to Turkish cinema and the screening of "Aila" in Pakistani cinemas will prove to be a very important milestone in Pakistan-Turkey relations.
